Max-Joseph-Platz in front of the opera house in Munich will be remodeled from September, inspired by a plan from 1825. The city council will decide on the remodeling on Tuesday, but this is not the final decision. The square, which is currently mostly used as an underground car park entrance, is to be redesigned. The building department already presented plans for a temporary redesign last November. If the city council agrees, the redesign is expected to begin in September and be completed by December 2025. The design of the square is based on the plan from 1825, with a traffic circle in the middle, which will be divided into fields and planted with grass. The paths will be paved with a beige gravel mix to make the square barrier-free. The entrance to the underground car park will be narrowed and fitted with kerbs. The costs for the redesign amount to 3.87 million euros. A permanent redesign of the square is expected to be considered in 2029, possibly through a competition. During the construction work, the traditional costume parade to the Wiesn is expected to take place as usual, but the “Opera for All” will need an alternative venue. The construction site will be interrupted for the IAA 2025.
